Name: Victoria York
City: Mobile, Alabama
Main Hustle: Mama
Side Hustle: Jewelry Designer
How did you get started?: I’ve been going through the most difficult time of my life. I am a mom of two boys. My youngest son was taken from my custody and given to his absent father who has severe mental health issues. I’ve never done drugs or even drank alcohol, and my baby was taken and given to this stranger. It’s been an expensive two-year battle, and I needed something to work on as a stress reliever, something to occupy my mind, to make a little money, and to also be something I really enjoyed.
When/where do you work on your Side Hustle?: Mostly at home, and sometimes wherever I find the inspiration.
What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: I am making 90 plus pieces a day. I’m running out of earring pieces and constantly having to go to the store to buy more even when I’m buying them in bulk.
What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: My oldest son has really been hurt by this custody battle. Helping me make and design some of the jewelry has made him feel like he has a part in this business, because he does! If it wasn’t for my boys, I would not be doing this.
Who is your greatest supporter?: My entire family. Even my brother, who has no idea about jewelry, let me know that there’s a big market for this kind of stuff. I credit his girlfriend for telling him that, though.
Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?: My children. It’s been super tough being separated from my youngest.
The injustice is unreal, but I’ll continue fighting for what is right.
This money made with the jewelry is helping with attorney fees and court costs.
What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: I’ve always wanted to own a used bookstore. I would love to own a little hole-in-the-wall bookstore and feature some of the pieces I make, as well as artwork from my friends who are artists. Oh, and free coffee for everyone!
Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?: Just do what makes you happy.
If you aren’t enjoying what you do, change it!
