Name: Teresa Daniel
City: Memphis, Tennessee
Main Hustle: I am on the social media team at a Fortune 500 company. I love the opportunity it affords me to be creative every day, learn new things, and grow my leadership skills.
Side Hustle: I am a Memphis photographer specializing in portraits, product, and pet photos. My style is bright, with the truest whites and most vibrant colors. I love candid lifestyle shots and incorporating my subjects’ personalities into their shoots.
How did you get started?: My mom gave me a DSLR camera in college because I was a journalism student and had a personal blog. I learned to shoot manual through a community education class at Memphis College of Art, and the rest is history! I’m big on building community through Instagram, so most of my shoots have come from relationships I’ve built there.
When/where do you work on your Side Hustle?: I shoot mostly on weekends, with occasional after-work shoots for that perfect golden hour light!
What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: It can be challenging to run any kind of side hustle and juggle various passions. Time is probably the biggest challenge, because I’m also getting a masters in journalism and strategic media, so I have to be careful to plan my schedule to where all of my responsibilities and clients get all the love and attention they deserve.
What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: It’s a special treat when I get to work with fellow creatives, like local artists who will then use their images to support their small businesses. I love how photography has given me the opportunity to meet new people in my community, attend events I normally wouldn’t, and explore new locations around the city.
Who is your greatest supporter?: My husband, Jeff. He’s always encouraging me to be myself and go for what makes me happy, and one of those things is definitely photography.
Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?:
My greatest inspiration is making people happy through photos.
A lot of people aren’t comfortable in front of the camera, but if I can help them to relax and enjoy themselves, they’re usually super happy with the end result. I love helping families capture memories and helping artists and bloggers grow their businesses with images, so that’s a huge inspiration as well.
Have you received recognition for your work?: I’m honored to say, yes! I’m excited every time my work is published by third parties. One of my favorite features is on Inspired by This, a shoot with local artist and working mom, Meghean Warner.
What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: My dream for my side hustle is that it would keep growing and evolving, making both me and my clients happy. I would also love for my photography to one day involve some travel. I’ve enjoyed getting out and exploring Memphis more through my shoots, and it would be incredible if I could do the same in other places.
Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?:
Remember why you started and how far you’ve come. It can be easy to always look ahead and work towards the next big thing, but that can also lead to disappointment when those things don’t happen as quickly as you’d like them to. That’s when I remind myself how far I’ve come since the beginning, and that helps me to give myself grace and be happy with where I am.
