Samantha: Artist

Name: Samantha Douglas

Age: 31

City: Memphis, Tennessee

Side Hustle: Artist

How did you get started?: I’ve always enjoyed anything and everything that involved creativity and art. When my husband and I bought our first house in Mobile, AL, it had 12 foot ceilings and I was desperately in need for some large art. Being newlyweds, the gorgeous, large pieces of art I saw around town were out of our price range. I decided there was no better time to pursue my dream of painting and be my own client!

When/where do you work?: I am a full-time school counselor at Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis, TN. I’m also a full-time mom of two sweet boys, Charlie and Henry.

What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: Finding time! My boys are 1 and 2 years old. I paint on the weekends during their nap time and after they go to bed. My husband also graciously takes over at times when I have a deadline approaching or need to finish a commission.

What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: I love helping people who were in my same shoes buy affordable art for their home that they LOVE. I like my commissions to represent my clients, and I try to learn as much as I can about them before starting a piece.

Who is your greatest supporter?: Without a doubt, my husband. He is constantly encouraging me, complimenting my work through all of its stages, and pushing me to chase my passion.

Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?: My two little boys.

Being a mom changed me in ways I didn’t know I needed to change. I want to be the kind of mother that they are proud of. I want to be an inspiration to them. Some days that’s means putting down my brushes and picking up sidewalk chalk. But when Charlie (my two year old) tells me that “momma’s painting is pwetty,” well, there’s no better compliment.

What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: I’d love to sell my work in stores. Currently my work is all sold via private commissions, but I’d love to sell it in a more public forum.

Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?: Do what makes you happy. For me, painting is a tool for relaxation. I can express my feelings through my work and can lose myself in a piece.

People often ask how I find the time to paint on top of the other demands of my life, but you learn to make time for the things that make you happy.
