Name: Lyra Joy Almoite
City: Subic Bay, Philippines
Main Hustle: My main bread and butter is working remotely. I mainly work as a Project Manager for teams and agencies, but I also serve as an Online Business Manager/Executive Virtual Assistant to small businesses and business coaches.
Side Hustle: I own an online-based flower and gift shop with my kitchen counter doubling as my workshop space. I help people make their loved ones feel special by sending them flower bouquets, balloons, chocolates, cakes, curated gift boxes, and other gift requests.
How did you get started?: When I started traveling around Southeast Asia, I always tried to attend different kinds of workshop. I happened to attend a flower-arranging workshop, and I loved it! I love working with flowers, and it’s very therapeutic when you combine them stem by stem until they look so pretty. So I started looking for flower arrangement workshops, and that’s the only kind of workshop I’ve been doing since. Then, when I went back home, I decided that I wanted to profit from this hobby, so I started with a Facebook page and Instagram, posted my works, and I just started getting orders from there!
When/where do you work on your Side Hustle?: I have an extra room where I keep all my flower wraps, but mostly I do the flower arrangements on my kitchen counter.
What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: I would say the delivery. It’s just challenging because there are so many things to consider, like you have to make sure that the recipient is there, but you can’t disclose anything because it is a surprise, and then you also have to coordinate with the sender, and there are some “work emergencies” that I have to tend to. To add to that cause traffic jams–whew! To be honest I didn’t even imagine that I could multitask this much until I did the gift deliveries myself.
What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: Seeing the recipients happy and surprised! My favorite is when a client sends gifts to his or her mom–the emotion is just over the top and really heartwarming. It gives me a reason for why I do what I do.
Who is your greatest supporter?: My mom, for sure! My mom knows how hard I work and how much I stretch the limits. She helps me in as many ways as possible from helping me with the deliveries, cooking my food, and whatever other help I need to be honest. 😀 It’s really amazing to know that I am not alone in this.
Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?:
I always look back to what I was doing a year or two before. The goal is to have improvement. So whatever I am doing now, I know that two years from now I’ll reflect back to it at a much greater position. So I need to keep making progress. I was told before that achieving things is a type of momentum and that I have to keep making regular progress because doing so will keep me motivated and keep me moving forward. I don’t want to disappoint my future self.
What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: I want it to be bigger. I want to build my own team who could help me grow this. I want to expand my offerings and be able to cater to clients outside my city, too.
Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?:
Always validate your idea, but also don’t be discouraged when you don’t get the result you are expecting. If your gut says that your idea will work, keep working on it, tweak things, make it work, and ask for help. Trust me, people want to help you– it’s just that you have to ask.
