Lindy: Jewelry Designer

Name: Lindy Bishop

Age: 54

City: Eads,TN

Side Hustle: I design and create boho jewelry with a bit of western flare!

How did you get started?: I have always been interested in jewelry. I worked my way through high school and college selling fine jewelry and diamonds. I was on Pinterest one day and saw a cross made out of copper wire. I was so intrigued with this cross and its rustic vibe. I decided that I could probably make one, so I ordered some basic supplies and one thing led to another! I set up a small area in the house and started making crosses and rings! My obsession grew rather rapidly and when my daughters started taking an interest in what I was doing and asked me to make them this or that, it just kind of snowballed!

When/where do you work?: I moved my jewelry bench into a shop that I had built in my garage. As my tools, supply inventories, and need for space grew, it was a logical move to take over a bay in the garage that was already partially enclosed.

I work every day either designing, photographing, or posting pieces. Some days it all happens smoothly and others it a struggle!

What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: My biggest challenge right now is juggling my other part-time gigs and having enough time to play all the roles I need to in my jewelry business! It’s hard to find the time to do it all, and hopefully one day my passion—creating jewelry—will be enough to let the other part-time jobs go!

What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: The biggest reward is when someone purchases a piece of my jewelry, and I am not referring to the monetary side of things! I can’t begin to describe how it feels to have someone fall in love with something that I put so much of myself into. Each piece has so much of me in it: my thoughts and feelings, my happiness and struggles the day it was made. To have someone see value and beauty in what I have made is a reward I could never put a price on!

Who is your greatest supporter?: My 3 daughters are my greatest supporters! They can be my harshest critics too, but I need them to be honest with me! They have cheered me on and helped me with trunk shows, modeling, photographing, and social media. They have also helped me through my most doubtful times when I have questioned my future with this venture. I can’t imagine where I would be without their support.

Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?: My greatest source of inspiration seems to come from nature. I am an animal lover, and I enjoy being outside and active. The earthy colors of the outdoors are always present in my designs. I also gain a lot of inspiration from Pinterest, Instagram, and Etsy. There are so many talented makers out there whose creativity and originality inspire me daily.

Have you received recognition for your work? If so, please toot your horn below so we can include these details in your profile.: I have received recognition in the form of reviews from customers who have purchased and posted in my Etsy shop. My heart always skips a beat when I get a notice from Etsy that someone has left me feedback. So far it has all been positive, and it’s such a great feeling to know that someone across the country who purchased something from a picture on the Internet is pleased and happy with their purchase! I hope the good reviews continue!

What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: My dream for my jewelry business is that it will grow enough that I can eliminate my other part-time jobs and work solely for myself. My hopes and prayers are that I can grow it into all that God would have it be.

Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?:

My best advice is don’t give up. You will be told no, and you will have days that you want to quit, but if you are passionate about it, don’t give up! Find a way and make it work!
