Name: Leaticia Kaggwa
City: Toronto, Canada
Main Hustle: By day I manage the marketing and PR at an employee wellbeing company.
Side Hustle: Kink & Coil is a natural hair brand dedicated to helping women of colour celebrate their kinks, coils, and curls. Our mission is to expand natural hair care by creating unique, innovative, affordable, and healthy products that are designed specifically with highly-textured hair in mind. The products we sell are the result of my years spent researching what’s missing in the textured hair space. While our products and apparel are specifically designed with textured hair in mind, they’re highly effective for any hair type.
How did you get started?: Kink & Coil began as a personal blog back in 2014. Having just moved away from home, I suddenly found myself at a loss for ways to take care of my natural hair. It’s embarrassing to admit how heavily I relied on my mom and stylist to handle all my hair-related needs! I had no clue about how my hair type influenced the sort of products and tools I should use, let alone how to style it.
Thankfully the Internet had my back. I researched everything from moisture and length-retention techniques to styling tutorials, experimented for months on end, and did my best to record what I learned on my blog. From there I started attending natural hair meetups and hair shows across Toronto because I simply couldn’t get enough. I became obsessed with natural hair!
What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: Definitely scaling. It’s getting trickier to find space for inventory as we add new products (which is an awesome problem to have!). There’s a growing pile of responsibilities to juggle, too, including nurturing new distribution channels, maintaining an active social media presence, and regularly attending events.
What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: Firstly, getting to work with my mom. We live in different cities, so running Kink & Coil has deepened our connection and encouraged us to chat more often.
Secondly, Kink & Coil has enabled me to be more vocal in spreading awareness about issues that affect people of colour. From day one it has served as a platform for activism and amplifying important stories that tend to get overlooked.
It’s also extremely satisfying to birth an idea into reality. I’m always amazed when I think back on how abstract my initial idea of Kink & Coil was and how much it has evolved since then. The whole experience has shown me how innovative, resourceful, intuitive, and entrepreneurial I am. It has been a fun journey of self discovery.
Who is your greatest supporter?: It’s a tie between my mom and my partner, Ben. Kink & Coil wouldn’t be where it is today without their ideas and encouragement.

If so, please toot your horn below so we can include these details in your profile.: We received a glowing review of our satin-lined hats in Naturally Curly, one of the most authoritative websites on all things natural hair: https://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/coils/here-s-the-scoop-on-the-kink-and-coil-satin-lined-beanie
Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?:
Think hard about what it means to you to be successful. Our society tends to elevate people who have achieved astronomical levels of fame and fortune, but that’s only one limited definition of “success.” Try to avoid comparing yourself to others and instead focus on reaching the goals that matter to you.
