Main Hustle: My main hustle is freelance graphic design! I started my company, Stellen Design, almost five years ago, and it has been a whirlwind! We focus on the creative side of brand development, like logos and brand guides, but we also do website design! Quitting my full-time job was the scariest thing ever but has also been the most exciting and rewarding thing I could have done. It helped give me the courage to start my side hustle, The Bear and The Blonde, which is nowhere near profitable, so I think of it more as a passion project.
Side Hustle: The Bear and The Blonde is a lifestyle blog based around everything my husband and I love: great food, epic travels, and healthy living! It started out as a way to document our travels and share some recipes, but it has grown into me learning everything there is to know about SEO and content strategies. Overall I have really been enjoying the process, and I am excited to see where it can take us in the future.
How did you get started?: My husband, Micah, and I were at a wine bar in Seattle, the place was your typical wine bar, but oddly enough they were playing JaRule and other rap jams from the early 2000s, so it seemed really off. We joked we needed to start an ambiance consulting blog called “Ambeyonce,” and the tagline would be “Because Beyonce is not for every business”. But we decided that would be a little limiting, so we decided to broaden our spectrum and go with “The Bear and The Blonde.” I bought the domaine name to use for our wedding website, knowing that I would need to have the site ready to launch on our wedding—as if planning a wedding wasn’t enough work, lol. But we did it! We launched small and have been adding to it ever since!
When/where do you work on your Side Hustle?: WEEKENDS ONLY! As much as I love The Bear and The Blonde, given my other business is all freelance work, it’s really important for me to not take away time from keeping that business running. After all it is the money maker right now. I usually work on The Bear and The Blonde from my bed. It’s nice to not be in my home office all the time, and I feel like with the blog I have the freedom to work on it from my bed.
What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: My biggest challenge is having faith that the blog will make enough money to sustain itself and compensate me for my time spent on it. Sometime on the weekends I just want to chill and not be in front of a screen, but that is not an option right now.
What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: I love getting people signed up for our newsletter! It makes me so happy! Or when I get a positive comment on an article. That makes it all worth it!
Who is your greatest supporter?: My greatest supporter would be my family! They are always trying to help and get the word out any way they can.
Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?:
My biggest source of inspiration is other bloggers. When I hear their stories, I know I can do it too. It gives me hope!
Not that I am looking to ever quit my “day job;” I love being a designer, but it would be super awesome for blogging to become a serious side hustle.
Have you received recognition for your work? Haha the best recognition we received was from a friend who tried our chimichurri sauce recipe and said was the best they have ever had 🙂
What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: Our retirement goal is to have “The Bear and The Blonde BNB” in the mountains and offer a unique experience. But in the meantime, we would love for it to grow into a profitable blog or even a household brand of some sort.
Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?: Be constant!
There is no such thing as easy money, even if people make it look easy or sound easy.
Constancy is key. Always be moving forward.
