Name: Johanna Adamiak
City: Philadelphia, PA
Main Hustle: Registered Architect
Side Hustle: Online Home Designer and Interior Stylist
How did you get started?: I decided at a very young age that I wanted to be an architect. All throughout high school and college, I took various drawing and architectural courses.
In graduate school I became fascinated with how we are influenced by our environments. I was fortunate enough to work at a boutique design firm in DC, where I designed chic and cozy coffee shops and swanky restaurants and bars. This furthered my pursuit in understanding how people are influenced by their surroundings.
Through the design of my own home, I developed a passion for a warm, grounded, and organic approach to design. Soon after I started helping friends with the designs of their own homes, placing extra care to help them style in a way that is reflective of their values. Ever since then I have been eager to help more and more people create their dream spaces at home!
When/where do you work on your Side Hustle?: I work on my side hustle from home, in my little planty office space, whenever I get the chance! I usually try to get a couple of solid hours in on the weekends and then sporadically throughout the week.
What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: Making time! My full time gig is rarely only 40 hours a week, and when deadlines approach, I am working upwards of 60+ hours at my main job. Then, when you add in time for family, friends, and you know, life, it is hard to make it all work out.
What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: I don’t know where to start! Mostly it is feeling like I have empowered my clients to move forward with making a space in their home their “dream space.” Secondly it is so nice to be able to challenge my creative side! So much of my main gig is technical, so it is nice to be able to look at beautiful images and find furniture or fixtures for clients. I also love the challenge of creating tailored spaces for clients with limited budgets. It is so gratifying to me when people realize that having a space they love in their home doesn’t mean they need to spend thousands and thousands of dollars.
Who is your greatest supporter?: My husband, Mark! I have a tendency of taking on more that I can chew. When I came up with this idea of a side hustle, he was incredibly supportive and has taken on various responsibilities around the home to free up some of my time! I spend countless hours bouncing ideas off of him on how to scale the business, and he makes an incredible effort to be present and supportive every time.
Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?: I find inspiration everywhere I go. I really love to travel and found through school trips and travel of my own that design is everywhere. My husband and I recently traveled to Croatia for our 2 year anniversary, and that trip was an incredible source of inspiration for me! Experiencing the different cultures, sights, and food was an eye opener and has made me more reflective when I take on design challenges.
What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: My dream for my side hustle is that I can turn it into my main gig! I feel much more passionate about the work I do on the side, and I hope one day that I can pursue this passion full time.
Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?: Keep going, even it means taking a pause to reset! As I mentioned, making time is the hardest part for me. Sometimes I tell myself that it is okay to put my pencil down and step away from all of the work for a reset. Usually when I do this, I come back refreshed, with new ideas and feel more inspired.
