Name: Jessie Wagner
City: Fort Collins, Colorado
Main Hustle: My day job that I currently work part-time in the Promotional Products industry. Basically anything you can put a logo on from pens to mugs to apparel to crystal awards, we can probably do it.
Side Hustle: I currently have a lifestyle brand, Joyful Jessie which is a personal blog and coaching platform. I encourage women to be their best selves from the inside out.
On my blog and social media platforms, I like to encourage and uplift people to always find the bright side and remind people that nothing in life is free.
I believe that women have been told for so long that we are not smart enough, pretty enough, good enough, etc. Luckily times are changing. I am proud to be a part of that movement. I believe that every woman is capable of being her own hero and that you have the power inside you to change your life!”
Additionally I am a makeup artist. I have been a makeup artist for nine years and love helping women feel beautiful through the simple tool of makeup. The majority of my clientele are weddings and photoshoot makeup. Many would describe my artistry style as natural and timeless. Something I pride myself on is that most of my clients still feel like themselves once they are done sitting in my chair. I love seeing that moment when I hand them the mirror, and they exclaim something like “Wow, I look great!” or “I feel beautiful.” There is nothing quite like it.
How did you get started?: I got my first makeup job while I was in college at Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. I was lucky to work for a brand that aligned so greatly with my personal values. Bobbi believes that makeup is a tool to help you enhance your natural features and not change your face.
After seeing so many women of different backgrounds and ethnicities who collectively did not actually think they were beautiful, it led me to start my personal blog about my journey to finding joy and seeing myself as the beautiful woman that I am. Eventually that led to my coaching programs, helping women to empower themselves to be their best selves, inside and out.
When/where do you work on your Side Hustle?: I work on my side hustle before I start work for my day job, from 7-9 AM. Then I work my day job from 9-4, and typically I do another couple of hours of work after I am done with my day job from 4-6ish. Some days, like today, I have a super long day and end up at the computer until 10 PM. It just depends on the day and my schedule of makeup bookings, coaching clients, meetings, networking, etc.
What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: My biggest challenge is time.
I make a daily to-do list every single morning and try to start with my three most important things. From there I just go down the list and hustle hard to get it all done. I would say most days I leave a few things on the list, and those tasks then get moved to the next day. I try my best to get it all done, but I am only one person and I have to give myself grace a lot of the time.
What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: The rewards of my side hustle are endless! It fuels my soul, my creativity, and my life mission of helping women to feel amazing from the inside out. And it doesn’t hurt that it also helps pays the bills.
Who is your greatest supporter?: My husband is my biggest cheerleader. He helps to keep me accountable for the goals I set for myself. He helps me to work through problems. He has had multiple businesses, so I always appreciate his advice when he gives it. We have work parties all the time. He has a stressful full-time job and is currently in a Masters program so a lot of late-night-working-at-the-computer parties happen often, and dance parties usually ensue.
Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?: One of my biggest inspirations is nature/getting outside. There is nothing quite as grounding as being outside and taking a deep breathe. It’s good for the soul and the mind. My other inspiration is other female entrepreneurs, specifically that foster community. I truly believe that women work better together and I love when I find other likeminded women who believe that too and help to build community around them in person and online.
What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: My dream for my side hustle is to for it to become my full-time hustle. I am the closest I have ever been now that I am working part-time for my day job. One day I will have a full book of coaching clients, bridal clients 3 out of 4 weekends, and I can’t forget speaking engagements and workshops, too.
Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?:
If it’s in your heart, go for it! Don’t minimize yourself. You will only wish you had started sooner. Say yes, and figure it out on the way if you need to. Failure is one of the best teachers; embrace it and then move on.
There will be people who don’t understand what you’re doing and why, and they don’t have to, but you have to do it anyways. Surround yourself with people who encourage you and support you, and remember to be your own cheerleader.
