Name: Carlye Waters
City: Mobile, Alabama
Main Hustle: Medical Device Sales Rep with Zimmer Biomet. I sell orthopeadic devices to spine doctors and general orthopeadic surgeons. I have been working with ZB for over 5 years. I started in pharmaceutical sales in January 1999 and have had a successful career.
Side Hustle: Always worried about the next layoff or buy out, I decided to take my passion for nutrition and go back to school online to become a Certified Health and Wellness Coach. In September 2017 I graduated from the largest Nutrition School, the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in NYC. I also decided to become a yoga instructor and went through 200HR training in Mobile through Glow Studios. I started Illume Health and Wellness in November 2017. I work with individuals, as well as small groups based on goals, to create lifelong healthy habits. I also incorporate yoga classes with my clients if they are interested.
How did you get started?: After being diagnosed with breast cancer at 35, I decided to look into nutrition more closely. I didn’t have the gene for breast cancer, so I knew it was what I was putting in and on my body. After years of reading and research and worried about losing another job through another layoff or merger, I decided to take my passion and create a side hustle! I have been thrilled at the excitement, support, and growth of my business.
While studying to become a health coach, I decided to sign up for yoga teacher training at my local studio and to be able to teach yoga to my clients as well. Health is more than the food we eat, and I believe yoga is an amazing workout for our bodies and our minds.
When/where do you work on your Side Hustle?: When I’m not working my sales job, in between sales calls, during lunch, at night, etc.
What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: Not being able to focus more time on my clients and their needs.
What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: Clients meeting their goals, losing weight, reducing cholesterol, blood pressure, sleeping better, having less stress, and feeling better in their bodies!
Who is your greatest supporter?: My family, close friends, and my clients!
Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?: Living a long, healthy life free of disease to be with my family and sharing my knowledge with others to achieve that as well.
Have you received recognition for your work?: I was featured in Access Magazine in Mobile, Alabama.
What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: My dream is to take it full time and create a company that provides many programs and options for everyone looking to be their healthiest. I’d love to work with individuals, families, gyms, yoga studios, corporate businesses, and even schools.
Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?:
Have faith!! Be grateful to have found a passion and put your heart into it everyday. Don’t let others (family or friends) discourage you because they don’t see or understand your vision or goals. Keep pushing forward!
