Name: Brittany Worrell Boyce
City: Memphis, Tennessee
Main Hustle: Freelance Writer specializing in real estate, insurance, and mortgage topics
Side Hustle: Lifestyle blogger
How did you get started?: I started my first blog way back in 2009 before it was something you could make a career out of. It covered my day-to-day life through college and law school and evolved as I planned my wedding and then later when I became pregnant with my first baby. After she was born, I took a hiatus from blogging but had the desire to get back into it. I officially started a new blog in 2016 but didn’t really begin creating content until 2017. The rest is history!
When/where do you work on your Side Hustle?: I’m fortunate to be able to stay at home with my two girls, so I do most of my blog work from the kitchen counter or the sofa! The girls are in preschool two days per week, so I try to cram in as much of my blog responsibilities as possible during that time, from taking photos to drafting content to pitching and responding to emails.
What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: Obviously being a mom is a full-time responsibility, so I have to fit my blogging into the nooks and crannies of my day! I’m definitely not complaining because I dreamed of being able to stay at home with my girls ever since my first daughter was born. It just definitely has its challenges some days, especially when I’m up against a campaign deadline or I’m juggling time-sensitive blog work and freelance work at the same time while parenting my girls!
What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?:
The biggest reward is having something that’s MINE to be passionate about.
It was hard leaving the corporate world because I spent so much of my early career focused on professional growth, and putting all of that aside to stay at home made me question my worth. It may sound silly, but if hard work is all you’ve known, it can feel weird to wake up without a plan for your day except prepping meals for your kids and taking them to storytime! Aside from being proud of the work I’ve put into my blog, being able to contribute financially to our family has been a huge accomplishment.
Who is your greatest supporter?: My husband (of course!) and my parents, too. My mom reads all of my posts!
Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?: Gosh, there are so many bloggers and other pros out there who inspire me! I would definitely say that Mallory from Style Your Senses has always been a light in the blogging world, and I love her down-to-earth approach to blogging and momming. And from a personal perspective, my girls inspire me daily when it comes to generating ideas for the blog and social media posts.
What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: I would love to eventually turn this into a full-time gig but with the ability to pick and choose how and when I work on the blog to have a good balance between work and family time.
Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?: Just go for it! I created my domain in 2016 and had the hardest time actually getting started creating content. I think I allowed myself to become overwhelmed with all of the steps involved—it really can be overwhelming if you allow it.
Just take it one step at a time, always strive for growth, but never feel like you have to have things perfect—that will drive you crazy! 🙂
