City: Toronto, Ontario
Main Hustle: The interesting thing is that my main hustle today started as my side hustle. My company Next Edition is a communications agency that seeks to help businesses and entrepreneurs authentically express who they are and what they stand for, providing copywriting and editing services across various industries. What started as freelance work transformed into a completely new career path. Coming from the financial services industry, I craved more creative work, collaborative interaction, and freedom from the 9 to 5 lifestyle.
Side Hustle: My side hustle is what I would describe as the perfect combination of what I excel at and what I’m passionate about. As Copy Editor of Thoughtfully Magazine, every issue I work on is its own unique journey where I get to 1) grow in my career as a copy editor 2) learn about the different products, businesses, and modalities in health, wellness, and green beauty 3) and apply my learnings to improve my self-care and well-being. I call this my “divine” side hustle because while it’s a lot of work, it marries what I enjoy doing the most when it comes to my career and life. Not to mention my Creative Director is a fixture of continuous inspiration, with uncompromising values that transcend through the publication, raising women up everywhere. She continues to empower me as a writer, and I am beyond grateful to be part of Thoughtfully Magazine for this reason.
How did you get started?: Growing up, writing was always my strong suit. One of my high school teachers told me I had “natural prose,” which is something I only came to appreciate much later in my life. In an effort to make some extra money, I started offering resume writing services. Through a long line of referrals, I was keeping relatively busy only to realize I wanted to do more of this. As I began marketing myself more via Instagram, my business organically grew which pushed me to take the leap and leave my full-time job. During this process, I also found myself wanting to use my business as a platform to connect with and inspire other businesses to pursue their passions and live their best lives.
When/where do you work on your Side Hustle?: I work on my side hustle at home or at the nearest Starbucks. A change of scenery is always necessary when I’m doing long form editing and writing. Caffeine and table space are also key essentials to any productive day of mine.
What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: Overworking myself is definitely a challenge because it’s easy to sit at a table for 8 hours without taking a break. Deadlines are crucial in both my main hustle and side hustle. So its important for me to take breaks often and know when my productivity is reaching its peak. Writing and editing requires my full creative attention, so taking care of myself is integral to the value of my work.
What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: The rewards of my side hustle are ongoing because I am constantly learning—and that never gets old to me. And, while having the final product in my hands is the BEST part about my job, I always love getting the first few concepts of design and enjoying the sneak peeks of how it’s going to come together. I get that “jump on your bed” type of excitement haha.
Who is your greatest supporter?: My greatest supporter(s) are my mom, dad, and brother Alfio. Anything I put my mind to, they are in my corner. We are also extremely creative as a family unit, so generally I feel like they always get where I’m coming from any time I spring up a new idea. They are the best people, the ones I trust, and the ones that I know will always be there for me in my life and in my career.
Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?: I think my greatest source of inspiration is knowing that everything I want my life to be is possible.
I am firm believer that we can have everything we set our minds to. While that takes consistent thought and action in order to come to fruition, just that alone is what motivates me each and everyday. I also look to other entrepreneurs who have started businesses out of nearly nothing and that always eliminates any excuses getting in the way of what I want to accomplish.
Have you received recognition for your work?: I am a published Copy Editor in 4 issues of Thoughtfully. If that’s not recognition, I don’t know what is!
What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: The dream for my side hustle is to keep living it! I also want my work to bring me to a new place (like NYC). I really want to experience another city at this time in my life, and if my work can take me there, that would be amazing.
Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?:
My advice for those pursuing a side hustle is to make sure that what you’re doing lights you up inside. If you’re going to be spending all of your extra time on something, make sure it’s worthwhile for you. Another thing that I would reiterate is that success doesn’t happen over night. Be patient with yourself, focus on what you want to create, and the rest will follow. Also be reminded that your Instagram following is not a determinant of your success.
